The V60 Cross Country offers 8.3 inches of ground clearance, is nearly as capable off-road as the Outback and can tow up to 2,000 pounds. The treatment is similar to Subaru’s Outback, which is effectively a lifted, wagon version of its Legacy sedan. The V60 Cross Country gets a 2.4-inch lift in ride height, standard all-wheel drive (AWD) and a body kit that advertises its off-road prowess with plastic fender flares and special bumpers. Fuel economy is about even with the V60’s two peers, the Outback and the Audi A4 Allroad, and the V60 drinks premium gas. But to use the XC60’s extra room, you have to pile up your packages to the ceiling. If you’re wondering how the V60 and XC60 compare on utility, well, the V60 offers 23.2 cubic-feet of cargo space behind its rear seats and 50.9 with them folded to the XC60’s 17.8 and 63.6. The wagon’s lower center of gravity and sleek looks make it a slightly more compelling drive than most crossovers and a definitely more likely to stand out in a crowd. The V60, like its sedan sibling the S60, is a direct relative of the XC60 crossover and all three share the same platform. Though they retain the utility they’ve always had, wagons are now as much a style choice as a practical one, and the Volvo V60 is very stylish. Only the Subaru Outback and Mini Clubman play to mainstream buyers, and Subaru advertises the Outback as a crossover.
